2、Science Centre North Block, CUHK ALL INTERESTED ARE WELCOME * Abstract Majorana Fermion (MF), a particle which is its own antiparticle, has been predicted more than 80 years in elementary particle physics, however, its physical realization using quasi-particles in condensed matter physics and ultrac
3、old atoms is always of great challenging. The breakthrough is made based on the simple idea that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and s-wave pairing, which can lead to induced p-wave pairing in some parameter regime. This is nothing, but the basic requirement of anti- symmetry for the pair function for fer
4、mionic condensation. This idea stimulates the searching of MFs with semiconductors in proximity to s-wave superconductor as well as spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas. In this Seminar, I want to tell an interesting story of Fermi surface and its topology from the viewpoint of symmetry. I will s
5、how how topology and pairing symmetry, from BCS pairing to finite momentum pairing (FFLO phase), can be realized by carefully controlling the Zeeman field and its polarization. I will also briefly discuss its physical realization with solid materials, in which we show that all the semiconductors nanowires even with small Lande g factor, in principle, can be used to realize MFs.
