3、rtwined. During the height of the tea trades 100 year heyday, total tea exports, including green tea, oolong tea, and black tea, reached a high point of more than 50% of Taiwans total export income. During the entire period tea was Taiwans number one foreign exchange earner. The saying at the time w
4、as “sugar from the south and tea from the north” with tea clearly holding the lead position. The tea business at the time was almost entirely export oriented. All of the islands roughly produced tea was shipped north to Taipeis Da Daocheng district where Taipeis tea merchants did the final refining
5、of the tea then and exported it. Business was booming. It was this boom in the tea trade that led Taiwan governor Liu Ming-Chuan to form the “Association for the Continued Peaceful Prosperity of the Tea T rade” in 1889. The associations goal was to bring together Taiwans tea merchants to cooperative
6、ly promote Taiwanese tea, the pride of Taiwan. As political power moved from the hands of the Qing government to the Japanese and later to the Chinese Nationalists, the association was asked by the various governments to change its name several times. Finally, in 1949, by government decree this inde
7、pendently organized association of tea merchants to take on its current name, the “Taipei Tea Merchants Association.” After this long historic journey, it is now time to celebrate the associations 120th anniversary. During this 120 year period the hard work of previous generations created a flourish
8、ing industry that was once the envy of Taiwan, much like todays electronics industry. Tea became so fully synonymous with wealth that it was difficult to see whether tea people had become wealthy or wealthy people had decided to make tea. It was also the hard work of the previous generations that ha
9、ve left us with the current Taipei Tea Merchants Association building and over a centurys worth of historical association records and prestige. In 1980 the government revised its tea policy ending the historically used tea licensing law and freeing farmer to grow, manufacture, and sell tea themselve
10、s. Under this so called “Give Tea Back to the Farmers” policy tea exports have fallen year by year. At the same time Taiwans own economic situation has improved and booming domestic tea activities have turned tea from an export oriented business to a domestically oriented business, giving rise to th
11、e numerous domestic tea brands which make up the current Taiwanese tea market. The Buddha said, “Difficulty teaches wisdom.” In the face of difficulty we think of innovative means to break out of our current situation. It is also said that “when God closes a door he will help you open a window.” Per
12、haps Taiwans tea industry can no longer prosper as a “traditional industry.” Todays tea industry needs to adapt to changing times. The industry needs to focus on higher end products and utilize images and stories from Taiwanese culture to create recognizably Taiwanese brands which can compete in the

With the unique fragrance, flavor, and aftertaste of Taiwanese tea, Taiwans unexcelled research and development capabilities, the passionate love that Taiwans tea people hold for tea, and the blessings of the Goddess Matsu, the Taipei Tea Merchants Association, Taiwans oldest trade or
