3、 into being. In this period, English is learnt not only for trade but also for social development and cross-cultural communication. It has become the most popular and commonly taught language in China. Nevertheless, English is learnt as a foreign language in the Chinese context, and most English lea

4、rners are confined in the classroom to learn English. They are easily influenced by their mother language and culture in writing or in C-E translation. Consequently, they produced Chinese English (Chinglish). Compared with that of the first phase, Chinese English is nearer to normative English in bo

5、th diction and sentence structures. In reality, some people even regard it as the higher phase of interlanguage with no or few grammatical errors. (Hall 1966:8) Although Chinglish is nearer to normative English, it is not normative English after all. To the native English speaker, Chinglish is funny

6、 and sometimes makes them puzzled or even angry. So it is necessary to avoid Chinglish especially in translating publicity material, and at the same time, we shouldnt mistake China English for Chinglish. 1.2 China English V.S Chinglish For a long time, China English had been confused with Chinglish

7、or Chinese English. This situation was not changed until 1980 when Professor Ge Chuangui (1982:90) first distinguished China English from Chinglish and rectified the formers legislative status. He vaguely defined China English as the English used to depict unique things in China. This general defini

8、tion did not stir up any sensation in the field of C-E translation. In 1988, Professor Huang Jinqi (1988:39-47) confirmed a positive aspect of Chinese-colored English. His voice was immediately echoed by Sunli (1989:19) who held that some research should be done on the English in China. Professor Wa

9、ng Rongpei (1991:2) went further to point out that China English was an objective reality and should not be denied. A more detailed definition 6 of China English he presented evoked a decade of dispute between China English and Chinglish. According to Professor Wang, the definition of China English

10、should consist of three parts:? used in China?built on Standard English and ? characterized with Chinese features. Two years later, Professor Li Wenzhong (1993:19) argued against Professor Wang by refuting two parts of the definition. Firstly, in his opinion, China English isnt only used in Chin磯悘輀(
