4、ershomeinVirginia,justpriortotheopeningofthecivilwar.Iwasthenachildofbutfiveyears,yetIwellrememberthetall,dark,smooth-faced,athleticmanwhomIcalledUncleJack.He seemed always to be laughing; and he entered into the sports of thechildren with the same hearty good fellowship he displayed toward thosepas
5、timesinwhichthemenandwomenofhisownageindulged;orhewouldsitforanhouratatimeentertainingmyoldgrandmotherwithstoriesofhisstrange,wild life in all parts of the world. We all loved him, and our slaves fairlyworshippedthegroundhetrod.Hewasasplendidspecimenofmanhood,standingagoodtwoinchesoversixfeet,broado

7、outherngentlemanofthehighesttype.Hishorsemanship,especiallyafterhounds,wasamarvelanddelighteveninthatcountryofmagnificenthorsemen.Ihaveoftenheardmyfathercautionhimagainsthiswildrecklessness,buthewouldonlylaugh,andsaythatthetumblethatkilledhimwouldbefromthebackofahorseyetunfoaled.Whenthewarbrokeouthe

11、tmyfatherandIowningandoperatingastringofgeneralstoresthroughoutVirginiaatthattime.CaptainCarterhadasmallbutbeautifulcottage,situatedonabluffoverlookingtheriver,andduringoneofmylastvisits,inthewinterof1885,Iobservedhewasmuchoccupiedinwriting,Ipresumenow,uponthismanuscript.Hetoldmeatthistimethatifanyt
12、hingshouldhappentohimhewishedmetotakechargeofhisestate,andhegavemeakeytoacompartmentinthesafewhich stood in his study, telling me I would find his will there and somepersonalinstructionswhichhehadmepledgemyselftocarryoutwithabsolutefidelity.AfterIhadretiredforthenightIhaveseenhimfrommywindowstanding
13、inthemoonlightonthebrinkofthebluffoverlookingtheHudsonwithhisarmsstretchedouttotheheavensasthoughinappeal.Ithoughtatthetimethathewaspraying,althoughIneverunderstoodthathewasinthestrictsenseofthetermareligiousman.Severalmonthsafter Ihad returned homefrom my last visit,thefirst ofMarch,1886,Ithink,Ire
14、ceivedatelegramfromhimaskingmetocometohimatonce.IhadalwaysbeenhisfavoriteamongtheyoungergenerationofCartersandsoIhastenedtocomplywithhisdemand.Iarrivedatthelittlestation,aboutamilefromhisgrounds,onthemorningofMarch4,1886,andwhenIaskedtheliverymantodrivemeouttoCaptainCartersherepliedthatifIwasafriend
15、oftheCaptainshehadsomeverybadnewsforme;theCaptainhadbeenfounddeadshortlyafterdaylightthatverymorningbythewatchmanattachedtoanadjoiningproperty.Forsomereasonthisnewsdidnotsurpriseme,butIhurriedouttohisplaceasquicklyaspossible,sothatIcouldtakechargeofthebodyandofhisaffairs.Ifoundthewatchmanwhohaddisco
16、veredhim,togetherwiththelocalpolicechief and several townspeople, assembled in his little study. The watchmanrelatedthefewdetailsconnectedwiththefindingofthebody,whichhesaidhadbeenstillwarmwhenhecameuponit.Itlay,hesaid,stretchedfulllengthinthesnowwiththearmsoutstretchedabovetheheadtowardtheedgeofthe
17、bluff,andwhenheshowedmethespotitflasheduponmethatitwastheidenticalonewhereIhadseenhimonthoseothernights,withhisarmsraisedinsupplicationtotheskies.Therewerenomarksofviolenceonthebody,andwiththeaidofalocalphysician the coroners jury quickly reached a decision of death from heartfailure.Leftaloneinthes
18、tudy,IopenedthesafeandwithdrewthecontentsofthedrawerinwhichhehadtoldmeIwouldfindmyinstructions.Theywereinpartpeculiarindeed,butIhavefollowedthemtoeachlastdetailasfaithfullyasIwasable.HedirectedthatIremovehisbodytoVirginiawithoutembalming,andthathe be laid in an open coffin within a tomb which he pre
