16、sforhisplaceofresidence.Andthatwasallwecouldlearnofourguest.Hewasaverysilentmanbycustom.Alldayhehungroundthecoveoruponthecliffswithabrasstelescope;alleveninghesatinacorneroftheparlournextthefireanddrankrumandwaterverystrong.Mostlyhewouldnotspeakwhenspokento,onlylookupsuddenandfierceandblowthroughhis
17、noselikeafog-horn;andweandthepeoplewhocameaboutourhousesoonlearnedtolethimbe.Everydaywhenhecamebackfromhisstrollhewouldaskifanyseafaringmenhadgonebyalongtheroad.Atfirstwethoughtitwasthewantofcompanyofhisownkindthatmadehimaskthisquestion,butatlastwebegantoseehewasdesiroustoavoidthem.Whenaseamandidput
18、upattheAdmiralBenbow(asnowandthensomedid,makingbythecoastroadforBristol)hewouldlookinathimthroughthecurtaineddoorbeforeheenteredtheparlour;andhewasalwayssuretobeassilentasamousewhenanysuchwaspresent.Forme,atleast,therewasnosecretaboutthematter,forIwas,inaway,asharerinhisalarms.Hehadtakenmeasideoneda
19、yandpromisedmeasilverfourpennyonthe first of every month if I would only keep my “weather-eye open for aseafaringmanwithoneleg”andlethimknowthemomentheappeared.OftenenoughwhenthefirstofthemonthcameroundandIappliedtohimformywage,hewouldonlyblowthroughhisnoseatmeandstaremedown,butbeforetheweekwasouthe
20、wassuretothinkbetterofit,bringmemyfour-pennypiece,andrepeathisorderstolookoutfor“theseafaringmanwithoneleg.”Howthatpersonagehauntedmydreams,Ineedscarcelytellyou.Onstormynights,whenthewindshookthefourcornersofthehouseandthesurfroaredalongthecoveandupthecliffs,Iwouldseehiminathousandforms,andwithathou
21、sanddiabolicalexpressions.Nowthelegwouldbecutoffattheknee,nowatthehip;nowhewasamonstrouskindofacreaturewhohadneverhadbuttheoneleg,andthatinthemiddleofhisbody.Toseehimleapandrunandpursuemeoverhedgeandditchwastheworstofnightmares.AndaltogetherIpaidprettydearformymonthlyfourpennypiece,intheshapeofthese
22、abominablefancies.ButthoughIwassoterrifiedbytheideaoftheseafaringmanwithoneleg,Iwasfarlessafraidofthecaptainhimselfthananybodyelsewhoknewhim.Therewerenightswhenhetookadealmorerumandwaterthanhisheadwouldcarry;andthenhewouldsometimessitandsinghiswicked,old,wildsea-songs,mindingnobody;butsometimeshewou
23、ldcallforglassesroundandforceallthetremblingcompanytolistentohisstoriesorbearachorustohissinging.OftenIhave heard the house shaking with “Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum,” all theneighboursjoininginfordearlife,withthefearofdeathuponthem,andeachsinginglouderthantheothertoavoidremark.Forinthesefitshewas
24、themostoverriding companion ever known; he would slap his hand on the table forsilence all round; he would fly up in a passion of anger at a question, orsometimes because none was put, and so he judged the company was notfollowinghisstory.Norwouldheallowanyonetoleavetheinntillhehaddrunkhimselfsleepy
