7、dent,amysteriousandpuzzlingphenomenon,whichdoubtlessnoonehasyetforgotten.Nottomentionrumourswhichagitatedthemaritimepopulationandexcitedthepublicmind,even in the interior of continents, seafaring men were particularly excited.Merchants,commonsailors,captainsofvessels,skippers,bothofEuropeandAmerica,
8、navalofficersofallcountries,andtheGovernmentsofseveralStatesonthetwocontinents,weredeeplyinterestedinthematter.Forsometimepastvesselshadbeenmetbyanenormousthing,alongobject, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger andmorerapidinitsmovementsthanawhale.Thefactsrelatingtothis
9、apparition(enteredinvariouslog-books)agreedinmostrespectsastotheshapeoftheobjectorcreatureinquestion,theuntiringrapidityofitsmovements,itssurprisingpoweroflocomotion,andthepeculiarlifewithwhichitseemedendowed.Ifitwasawhale,itsurpassedinsizeallthose hitherto classified in science. Taking into conside
10、ration the mean ofobservationsmadeatdiverstimesrejectingthetimidestimateofthosewhoassignedtothisobjectalengthoftwohundredfeet,equallywiththeexaggeratedopinionswhichsetitdownasamileinwidthandthreeinlengthwemightfairly conclude that this mysterious being surpassed greatly all dimensionsadmittedbythele
11、arnedonesoftheday,ifitexistedatall.AndthatitDIDexistwasanundeniablefact;and,withthattendencywhichdisposesthehumanmindinfavourofthemarvellous,wecanunderstandtheexcitementproducedintheentireworldbythissupernaturalapparition.Astoclassingitinthelistoffables,theideawasoutofthequestion.Onthe20thofJuly,186
12、6,thesteamerGovernorHigginson,oftheCalcuttaandBurnachSteamNavigationCompany,hadmetthismovingmassfivemilesofftheeastcoastofAustralia.CaptainBakerthoughtatfirstthathewasinthepresence of an unknown sandbank; he even prepared to determine its exactpositionwhentwocolumnsofwater,projectedbythemysteriousob
13、ject,shotwithahissingnoiseahundredandfiftyfeetupintotheair.Now,unlessthesandbank had been submitted to the intermittent eruption of a geyser, theGovernor Higginson had to do neither more nor less than with an aquaticmammal,unknowntillthen,whichthrewupfromitsblow-holescolumnsofwatermixedwithairandvap
14、our.Similarfactswereobservedonthe23rdofJulyinthesameyear,inthePacificOcean,bytheColumbus,oftheWestIndiaandPacificSteamNavigationCompany.Butthisextraordinarycreaturecouldtransportitselffromoneplacetoanotherwithsurprisingvelocity;as,inanintervalofthreedays,theGovernorHigginsonandtheColumbushadobserved
15、itattwodifferentpointsofthechart,separatedbyadistanceofmorethansevenhundrednauticalleagues.Fifteen days later, two thousand miles farther off, the Helvetia, of theCompagnie-Nationale,andtheShannon,oftheRoyalMailSteamshipCompany,sailingtowindwardinthatportionoftheAtlanticlyingbetweentheUnitedStatesan
16、dEurope,respectivelysignalledthemonstertoeachotherin4215N.lat. and 60 35 W. long. In these simultaneous observations they thoughtthemselvesjustifiedinestimatingtheminimumlengthofthemammalatmorethanthreehundredandfiftyfeet,astheShannonandHelvetiawereofsmallerdimensionsthanit,thoughtheymeasuredthreehu
17、ndredfeetoverall.Nowthelargestwhales,thosewhichfrequentthosepartsofthesearoundtheAleutian,Kulammak,andUmgullichislands,haveneverexceededthelengthofsixtyyards,iftheyattainthat.Ineveryplaceofgreatresortthemonsterwasthefashion.Theysangofitinthecafes,ridiculeditinthepapers,andrepresenteditonthestage.All
18、kindsofstorieswerecirculatedregardingit.Thereappearedinthepaperscaricaturesofeverygiganticandimaginarycreature,fromthewhitewhale,theterribleMobyDick of sub-arctic regions, to the immense kraken, whose tentacles couldentangleashipoffivehundredtonsandhurryitintotheabyssoftheocean.Thelegendsofancientti
19、meswereevenrevived.Then burst forth the unending argument between the believers and theunbelieversinthesocietiesofthewiseandthescientificjournals.Thequestionofthemonsterinflamedallminds.Editorsofscientificjournals,quarrellingwithbelieversinthesupernatural,spilledseasofinkduringthismemorablecampaign,
20、 some even drawing blood; for from the sea-serpent they came todirectpersonalities.Duringthefirstmonthsoftheyear1867thequestionseemedburied,nevertorevive,whennewfactswerebroughtbeforethepublic.Itwasthennolongerascientificproblemtobesolved,butarealdangerseriouslytobeavoided.Thequestiontookquiteanothe
21、rshape.Themonsterbecameasmallisland,arock,areef,butareefofindefiniteandshiftingproportions.Onthe5thofMarch,1867,theMoravian,oftheMontrealOceanCompany,findingherselfduringthenightin2730lat.and7215long.,struckonherstarboardquarterarock,markedinnochartforthatpartofthesea.Underthecombinedeffortsofthewin
22、danditsfourhundredhorsepower,itwasgoingattherateofthirteenknots.HaditnotbeenforthesuperiorstrengthofthehulloftheMoravian,shewouldhavebeenbrokenbytheshockandgonedownwiththe237passengersshewasbringinghomefromCanada.Theaccidenthappenedaboutfiveoclockinthemorning,asthedaywasbreaking.Theofficersofthequar
23、ter-deckhurriedtotheafter-partofthevessel.Theyexaminedtheseawiththemostcarefulattention.Theysawnothingbutastrongeddyaboutthreecableslengthdistant,asifthesurfacehadbeenviolentlyagitated. The bearings of the place were taken exactly, and the Moraviancontinueditsroutewithoutapparentdamage.Haditstruckon
24、asubmergedrock,oronanenormouswreck?Theycouldnottell;but,onexaminationoftheshipsbottomwhenundergoingrepairs,itwasfoundthatpartofherkeelwasbroken.Thisfact,sograveinitself,mightperhapshavebeenforgottenlikemanyothers if, three weeks after, it had not been re-enacted under similarcircumstances.But,thanks
