6、aClaraValley.JudgeMillersplace,itwascalled.Itstoodbackfromtheroad,halfhiddenamongthetrees,through which glimpses could be caught of the wide cool veranda that ranarounditsfoursides.Thehousewasapproachedbygravelleddrivewayswhichwoundaboutthroughwide-spreadinglawnsandundertheinterlacingboughsoftallpop
7、lars.Attherearthingswereonevenamorespaciousscalethanatthefront.Thereweregreatstables,whereadozengroomsandboysheldforth,rowsofvine-cladservantscottages,anendlessandorderlyarrayofouthouses,longgrapearbors,greenpastures,orchards,andberrypatches.Thentherewasthepumping plant for the artesian well, and th
8、e big cement tank where JudgeMillersboystooktheirmorningplungeandkeptcoolinthehotafternoon.AndoverthisgreatdemesneBuckruled.Herehewasborn,andherehehadlivedthefouryearsofhislife.Itwastrue,therewereotherdogs,Therecouldnotbutbeotherdogsonsovastaplace,buttheydidnotcount.Theycameandwent,residedinthepopul
9、ouskennels,orlivedobscurelyintherecessesofthehouse after the fashion of Toots, the Japanese pug, or Ysabel, the Mexicanhairless,strange creatures that rarely put nose out of doors or set foot toground.Ontheotherhand,therewerethefoxterriers,ascoreofthematleast,whoyelpedfearfulpromisesatTootsandYsabel
10、lookingoutofthewindowsatthemandprotectedbyalegionofhousemaidsarmedwithbroomsandmops.ButBuckwasneitherhouse-dognorkennel-dog.Thewholerealmwashis.HeplungedintotheswimmingtankorwenthuntingwiththeJudgessons;heescorted Mollie and Alice, the Judges daughters, on long twilight or earlymorningrambles;onwint
11、rynightshelayattheJudgesfeetbeforetheroaringlibraryfire;hecarriedtheJudgesgrandsonsonhisback,orrolledtheminthegrass,andguardedtheirfootstepsthroughwildadventuresdowntothefountaininthestableyard,andevenbeyond,wherethepaddockswere,andtheberrypatches.Amongtheterriershestalkedimperiously,andTootsandYsab
12、elheutterlyignored,forhewasking,kingoverallcreeping,crawling,flyingthingsofJudgeMillersplace,humansincluded.His father, Elmo, a huge St. Bernard, had been the Judges inseparablecompanion,andBuckbidfairtofollowinthewayofhisfather.Hewasnotsolarge,heweighedonlyonehundredandfortypounds,forhismother,Shep
13、,hadbeenaScotchshepherddog.Nevertheless,onehundredandfortypounds,towhichwasaddedthedignitythatcomesofgoodlivinganduniversalrespect,enabledhimtocarryhimselfinrightroyalfashion.Duringthefouryearssincehispuppyhoodhehadlivedthelifeofasatedaristocrat;hehadafineprideinhimself,wasevenatrifleegotistical,asc
14、ountrygentlemensometimesbecomebecauseoftheirinsularsituation.Buthehadsavedhimselfbynotbecomingamerepamperedhouse-dog.Huntingandkindredoutdoordelightshadkeptdownthefatandhardenedhismuscles;andtohim,astothecold-tubbingraces,theloveofwaterhadbeenatonicandahealthpreserver.Andthiswasthemannerof dogBuck w
15、as in the fall of 1897, when theKlondikestrikedraggedmenfromalltheworldintothefrozenNorth.ButBuckdid not read the newspapers, and he did not know that Manuel, one of thegardenershelpers,wasanundesirableacquaintance.Manuelhadonebesettingsin.HelovedtoplayChineselottery.Also,inhisgambling,hehadonebeset
16、tingweaknessfaithinasystem;andthismadehisdamnationcertain.Fortoplayasystemrequiresmoney,whilethewagesofagardenershelperdonotlapovertheneedsofawifeandnumerousprogeny.TheJudgewasatameetingoftheRaisinGrowersAssociation,andtheboyswere busy organizing an athletic club, on the memorable night of Manuelstr
17、eachery.NoonesawhimandBuckgooffthroughtheorchardonwhatBuckimaginedwasmerelyastroll.Andwiththeexceptionofasolitaryman,noonesawthemarriveatthelittleflagstationknownasCollegePark.ThismantalkedwithManuel,andmoneychinkedbetweenthem.“You might wrap up the goods before you deliver m,” the stranger saidgruf
18、fly,andManueldoubledapieceofstoutropearoundBucksneckunderthecollar.“Twistit,anyoullchokemplentee,”saidManuel,andthestrangergruntedareadyaffirmative.Buckhadacceptedtheropewithquietdignity.Tobesure,itwasanunwontedperformance:buthehadlearnedtotrustinmenheknew,andtogivethemcreditforawisdomthatoutreached
19、hisown.Butwhentheendsoftheropewereplacedinthestrangershands,hegrowledmenacingly.Hehadmerelyintimatedhisdispleasure,inhispridebelievingthattointimatewastocommand.Buttohissurprisetheropetightenedaroundhisneck,shuttingoffhisbreath.Inquickragehesprangattheman,whomethimhalfway,grappledhimclosebythethroat
