7、owevermanyyoudiscoverthereisalwaysonemore;andhersweetmockingmouthhadone kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectlyconspicuousintheright-handcorner.ThewayMr.Darlingwonherwasthis:themanygentlemenwhohadbeenboyswhenshewasagirldiscoveredsimultaneouslythattheylovedher,andtheyall
8、rantoherhousetoproposetoherexceptMr.Darling,whotookacabandnippedinfirst,andsohegother.Hegotallofher,excepttheinnermostboxandthekiss.Heneverknewaboutthebox,andintimehegaveuptryingforthekiss.WendythoughtNapoleoncouldhavegotit,butIcanpicturehimtrying,andthengoingoffinapassion,slammingthedoor.Mr.Darling
9、usedtoboasttoWendythathermothernotonlylovedhimbutrespected him. He was one of those deep ones who know about stocks andshares.Ofcoursenoonereallyknows,buthequiteseemedtoknow,andheoftensaidstockswereupandsharesweredowninawaythatwouldhavemadeanywomanrespecthim.Mrs.Darlingwasmarriedinwhite,andatfirstsh
10、ekeptthebooksperfectly,almostgleefully,asifitwereagame,notsomuchasaBrusselssproutwasmissing;butbyandbywholecauliflowersdroppedout,andinsteadofthemtherewerepicturesofbabieswithoutfaces.Shedrewthemwhensheshouldhavebeentottingup.TheywereMrs.Darlingsguesses.Wendycamefirst,thenJohn,thenMichael.Foraweekor
11、twoafterWendycameitwasdoubtfulwhethertheywouldbeabletokeepher,asshewasanothermouthtofeed.Mr.Darlingwasfrightfullyproud of her, but he was very honourable, and he sat on the edge of Mrs.Darlingsbed,holdingherhandandcalculatingexpenses,whileshelookedathimimploringly.Shewantedtoriskit,comewhatmight,but

17、ank,thisnursewasaprimNewfoundlanddog,calledNana,whohadbelongedtonooneinparticularuntiltheDarlingsengagedher.Shehadalwaysthoughtchildrenimportant,however,andtheDarlingshadbecomeacquaintedwithherinKensingtonGardens,whereshespentmostofhersparetimepeepingintoperambulators,andwasmuchhated by careless nur
18、semaids, whom she followed to their homes andcomplainedoftotheirmistresses.Sheprovedtobequiteatreasureofanurse.Howthoroughshewasatbath-time,andupatanymomentofthenightifoneofherchargesmadetheslightestcry.Ofcourseherkennelwasinthenursery.Shehadageniusforknowingwhenacoughisathingtohavenopatiencewithand
19、whenitneedsstockingaroundyourthroat.Shebelievedtoherlastdayinold-fashionedremedieslikerhubarbleaf,andmadesoundsofcontemptoverallthisnew-fangledtalkaboutgerms,andsoon.Itwasalessoninproprietytoseeherescortingthechildrentoschool,walkingsedatelybytheirsidewhentheywerewellbehaved,andbuttingthembackintoli
20、neiftheystrayed.OnJohnsfooterinEnglandsoccerwascalledfootball,“footer”forshortdayssheneveronceforgothissweater,andsheusuallycarriedanumbrellainhermouthincaseofrain.ThereisaroominthebasementofMissFulsomsschoolwherethenurseswait.Theysatonforms,whileNanalayonthefloor,butthatwastheonlydifference. 23、assure him, and then she would sign to the children to bespeciallynicetofather.Lovelydancesfollowed,inwhichtheonlyotherservant,Liza,wassometimesallowedtojoin.Suchamidgetshelookedinherlongskirtandmaidscap,thoughshehadsworn,whenengaged,thatshewouldneverseetenagain.Thegaietyofthoseromps!Andgayestofallw
24、asMrs.Darling,whowouldpirouettesowildlythatallyoucouldseeofherwasthekiss,andthenifyouhaddashedatheryoumighthavegotit.ThereneverwasasimplerhappierfamilyuntilthecomingofPeterPan.Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter when she was tidying up her childrensminds.Itisthenightlycustomofeverygoodmotherafterherch
