5、uttherewaslife,abroadinthelandanddefiant.Downthefrozenwaterwaytoiledastringofwolfishdogs.Theirbristlyfurwasrimedwithfrost.Theirbreathfrozeintheairasitlefttheirmouths,spoutingforthinspumesofvapourthatsettleduponthehairoftheirbodiesandformedintocrystalsoffrost.Leatherharnesswasonthedogs,andleathertrac
6、esattachedthemtoasledwhichdraggedalongbehind.Thesledwaswithoutrunners.Itwasmadeofstoutbirch-bark,anditsfullsurfacerestedonthesnow.Thefrontendofthesledwasturnedup,likeascroll,inordertoforcedownandundertheboreofsoftsnowthatsurgedlikeawavebeforeit.Onthesled,securelylashed,wasalongandnarrowoblongbox.The
7、rewereotherthingsonthesledblankets,anaxe,andacoffee-potandfrying-pan;butprominent,occupyingmostofthespace,wasthelongandnarrowoblongbox.Inadvanceofthedogs,onwidesnowshoes,toiledaman.Attherearofthesledtoiledasecondman.Onthesled,inthebox,layathirdmanwhosetoilwasover,amanwhomtheWildhadconqueredandbeaten
8、downuntilhewouldnevermovenorstruggleagain.ItisnotthewayoftheWildtolikemovement.Lifeisanoffencetoit,forlifeismovement;andtheWildaimsalwaystodestroymovement.Itfreezesthewatertopreventitrunningtothesea;itdrivesthesapoutofthetreestilltheyarefrozentotheirmightyhearts;andmostferociouslyandterriblyofalldoe
9、stheWildharryandcrushintosubmissionmanmanwhoisthemostrestlessoflife,everinrevoltagainstthedictumthatallmovementmustintheendcometothecessationofmovement.Butatfrontandrear,unawedandindomitable,toiledthetwomenwhowerenotyetdead.Theirbodieswerecoveredwithfurandsoft-tannedleather.Eyelashesandcheeksandlips

12、heweightofunendingvastnessandunalterabledecree.Itcrushedthemintotheremotestrecessesoftheirownminds,pressingoutofthem,likejuicesfromthegrape,allthefalseardoursandexaltationsandundueself-valuesofthehumansoul,untiltheyperceivedthemselvesfiniteandsmall,specksandmotes,movingwithweakcunningandlittlewisdom
13、amidsttheplayandinter-playofthegreatblindelementsandforces.Anhourwentby,andasecondhour.Thepalelightoftheshortsunlessdaywasbeginningtofade,whenafaintfarcryaroseonthestillair.Itsoaredupwardwithaswiftrush,tillitreacheditstopmostnote,whereitpersisted,palpitantandtense,andthenslowlydiedaway.Itmighthavebe
